Helping Your Child Eat Better

As a parent, you have to know that World Health Organization (WHO) found out that the number of obese children could balloon by the end of 2025. In 2012, WHO recorded 44 million of obese and overweight children. If this does not stop, WHO warned that it will rise to 75 million in 2025. This is indeed alarming.

Let this be an eye opener for all parents. It is not a secret that there are children here in Singapore who are suffering from obesity or overweight. Obesity is a major health issue not only here in Singapore but around the world. It is a problem now and it will continue to be a problem if you do not do anything about it.

Parents have a role to play to keep their child healthy and free from obesity. How can you help your child eat better? Here are some tips:

  • Healthy eating plan: You can begin by implementing healthy  eating plan. It would be beneficial if you know types of foods that should be limited so your child will not gain weight. For example, do not let your child consume foods that are rich in fats and high in calories. Tell your child to avoid refined grains like pasta and rice.
  • Replacing unhealthy foods: You should explain to your child the importance of healthy foods and the urgency to replace unhealthy foods. Encourage your child to eat fruits, nuts, vegetables, poultry, meat, eggs, milk and many more.

  • Apply changes: Remember that you are the role model. Whatever you consume, your child will think that it is okay to consume that too. If you are really serious about keeping your child healthy, you have to apply changes in your life. Your child will surely follow your example. If you have to give up drinking soda or fruit juices, do it.
  • Other ways: Supporting healthy eating habits is not easy but it is not impossible. It is hard at first but it will get easier as you go along. You have to teach your child to make healthy choices; you can do that by putting nutritious foods where your child can see it easily. You also need to minimize eating in fast food restaurants. More importantly, you can prepare the food personally and eat together with the family.

Explaining to your child about healthy eating or obesity is difficult especially if everything looks pleasant and delicious to him/her. If you consider the things mentioned above, your child will have a better life in the future.
